About

Learn from an internationally known marquetry expert how to create pictures and other designs with a palette that consists of wood with different colors and grain patterns.

Using thin pieces of wood known as veneers, you'll make and finish a marquetry panel of your own design, which you can later incorporate into a wall hanging, jewelry box, small cabinet, or other project.

In marquetry, veneer covers the entire surface, creating both the design and the background (inlay is a different veneering process, with only the design recessed into a background made of solid wood).

The class covers:

  • Obtaining veneer for marquetry.
  • Flattening, storing, and handling.
  • Creating a marquetry design and drawing a cartoon.
  • Cutting the veneers on a scroll saw the smart way.
  • Adding shading with hot sand for depth and realism.
  • Gluing the pieces.
  • Clamping in a vacuum press vs. mechanically.
  • Sanding and finishing.

Details

Bring a sack lunch each day. You're welcome to use the refrigerator and microwave on the lower level. BARN provides free coffee and tea.

Project

Your marquetry panel will measure approximately 8 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches on 1/4-inch thick MDF (medium-density fiberboard).

Materials

A $73 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you need.

Prerequisites

No prior BARN class is required. However, before class begins, you must view two videos and booklets made by the instructor about veneering and marquetry. The instructor will be condensing what is often a five-day class into three days, so it's important to be familiar with the steps. You'll receive a letter with the link after you register.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • Safety glasses and closed-toe shoes are required. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses and a dust mask.

Seeking something more challenging, he traveled to learn Japanese joinery; studied stone inlay, marquetry, and furniture restoration in Italy; and traditional boat building in England. In 1983, he opened a custom-furniture business, Schürch Woodwork, which operated in Santa Barbara, Calif., and more recently in Hawaii. Since 2001, he has been teaching marquetry, furniture design, and woodworking at trade schools and woodworking clubs and given presentations nationally and internationally. He has been featured in many magazines, shown at numerous galleries, and honored with numerous awards for his work. See more of his work and background at  schurchwoodwork.com and veneerartist.com.
