About This Workshop

Explore ikat, a way of using resist techniques to dye the warp and weft fibers of a fabric before weaving. This technique is found in many world cultures, especially in Southeast Asia. Dating back to the neolithic era, it's probably one of the oldest forms of textile decoration. Perhaps you were lucky enough to catch the fabulous exhibition at Seattle Art Museum in 2023 that showcased this compelling fabric? Here's your chance to devote a week to dyeing and weaving your own ikat cloth.

You'll spend the first three days of this workshop winding, preparing, and dyeing your warp and weft. The final two days will be at the loom, weaving your plain weave double ikat piece.

  • Day 1: Make your warp.
  • Day 2: Bind both warp and weft threads according to the pattern.
  • Day 3: Dye your threads in indigo.
  • Days 4 and 5: Dress your loom and weave your project.

Details

  • Skill level: You should be comfortable dressing a loom, and familiar with basic weaving terminology.
  • We'll take a 30-minute lunch break so bring lunch and snacks with you each day. There is a refrigerator and microwave you can use on the lower level.
  • Cancellation requests received before noon (Pacific Time) on Monday, Feb. 16, will be eligible for a refund minus a 15% cancellation fee ($132 for members, and $165 for guests). Cancellations after that won't be eligible for a refund.

Materials

  • A $35 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you'll need.
  • You need to bring weaving tools, apron, over-the-wrist sturdy gloves, and note-taking tools.
