About

The shellac plate process is a simple way to create and print an etching using matboard and shellac. The basics of how to make a shellac plate, etch, cut, shape, burnish, and print a plate will be covered in this one-day class.

Demonstrations on how to ink the plate and how to burnish the plate to create beautiful tonal qualities will be given. Two or three plates will be supplied for immediate use. A number of finished prints will be created.

Details

  • Skill level: Prior experience with printmaking is recommended but not required.
  • You'll be able to create new plates independently at home, and later return to the studio to print. The plates are reusable for a long time, but not as permanent as copper plates. No acids are used in making or printing these plates.
  • You're invited and encouraged to attend a Focused Open Studio led by your instructor, Virginia, 1-4 PM Jan. 11 to you can practice your newly acquired skills.

Materials

  • A $15 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers all the materials you'll need.
  • You're encouraged to bring in your preferred paper if you want. Light-weight Japanese paper works well along with the standard BFK, which also can be purchased at the studio on the day of the class.
