About

Learn how to create and bind your own accordion book! Accordion, or "concertina," binding is a simple form of bookbinding that doesn't require any sewing. You'll learn multiple ways to bind a book in an accordion format, making one or more accordion-style books with decorated pages and hard-bound covers.

First, you'll create hard covers for your books by wrapping bookbinding board with decorative paper. Then, you'll create your book pages, which can made out of one, single, folded sheet of paper; or several sheets of paper that are attached together. You'll decorate your book pages by drawing, painting, and/or collaging in images and text. Finally, you'll combine your covers and pages to produce one-of-a-kind accordion books.

Details

  • You're encouraged to bring ideas for the subject or images you'd like in your book. You could bring a poem or story you want to illustrate, for example.
  • You're welcome to bring paper printed with images and/or words that you'd like to collage into your book. The books will be about six-inches square, with between 6 and 12 pages (so make sure any collage materials you bring will fit).
  • Bring a lunch. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.

Materials

A materials fee of $15, included in the price of class, covers everything you'll need. Provided materials include:

  • Davey board for covers.
  • Decorative paper for covers.

Dana Seeger

Dana Harris Seeger was born in San Francisco and split her childhood between California and Indiana. She pursued her passion in high school and college and received a bachelor's degree in painting from Anderson University in Indiana in 2004 and a master's in fine arts in printmaking from San Jose State University in 2011. She is a member of the California Society of Printmakers. In 2014, Dana co-created an art studio and school in San Jose, Calif., called the School of Visual Philosophy. Her work in printmaking and painting helps her connect real to imagined memories and her life experiences to her heritage. Growing up as a second-generation Baltic American, she has always tried to connect the artifacts acquired from Estonia and Latvia into her own story. She lives in Poulsbo with her husband (a sculptor), daughter, and twin sons.
