About

This hands-on class is designed for young chefs who want to learn proper knife handling. Over three days, you'll focus on essential techniques and cuts such as chopping, slicing, dicing, julienne, and learn tips for honing and maintaining. Each day’s cutting projects will include putting together simple recipes. You'll gain competence and confidence in the kitchen to enjoy cooking at home with family and friends.
 
Day 1: Introduction to knife safety and honing. How to cut herbs and garlic. Project: Roasted vegetables with Argentinian chimichurri.
 
Day 2: Bias cut, julienne, bayonet, stalks. Project: Fruit, cheese, and vegetable platter with dip.
 
Day 3: Chop, dice, mince, zest. Project: Lebanese tabbouleh. 

Details

  • Designed for ages 10-14.
  • Don't bring water bottles. Water will be provided.
  • BARN’s kitchen facility regularly uses ingredients on the FDA’s major allergens list. This class uses milk and wheat.

Registering Youth

  • New registrants: When you register, select Others Only in the "Who Are You Registering?" section. On the next page, Add New Registrant. Create an account for your youth.
  • Next time you register: You will be able to Search Registrants to select your youth.
  • You may register your youth for an optional supervised lunch hour from noon-1 pm for the duration of this activity.
  • Make sure to fill out your youth's emergency contact information and other details when creating their account.

Materials

A materials fee of $10 is included in the class price. 

Class Policies

  • Closed-toe shoes must be worn in the studio at all times.
  • Tie back long hair.

Instructors or Guides

Danielle Potwin

Danielle earned her bachelor of fine arts degree in sculpture from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and has taught high school as well as assisted in teaching college classes in clay, drawing, painting, hot glass, sculpture, and printmaking. Her work has been featured in The Boston Globe and Art New England. Previous to becoming a first-generation college graduate, she was a pastry chef and worked in kitchens and research and development for 15 years. She holds certification in social-emotional learning and mindfulness facilitation as well as being a certified yoga teacher. She loves being able to give her knowledge and teach skills to people of all ages.
