About

Tools covered include the cold saw, horizontal and vertical bandsaws, hand-held bandsaw, hand-held plasma cutter, drill press, welding clamps, magnetic angles, and die, angle, and bench grinders. Participation in our welding and project classes, and in Open Studio events, is based on students' ability to safely and comfortably use hand and stationary power tools. All welding shop participants will greatly benefit from attending this class prior to working in the shop for the first time.

Details

  • This class doesn't cover welding equipment. That is covered in MIG, TIG, and brazing classes.
  • The class begins with a safety briefing. Safety and personal protection equipment will be provided. See Class Policies below for proper attire.
  • If you have questions, contact the studio via our online form.

Class Policies

  • You must wear natural fiber clothing (no stretch or synthetic fabrics), long-legged pants, long-sleeve shirts, and sturdy shoes with closed toes and heels (of natural fiber or leather).
  • Long hair must be tied back.
  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Instructors or Guides

Allen Miller

A software engineer by day, Al enjoys the opportunities BARN provides to make and repair real metal objects and to help others learn to do the same. He often hosts open studios in the machine and welding shops, and particularly enjoys fix it days where has been able to send several broken pieces of art and equipment back home to their owners.

David Muench

Dave Muench is a computer storage engineer who enjoys metal fabrication and mechanical work in his free time. Most often you’ll find him in his shop working with his wife on their Jeeps or doing other metalworking. Beyond general fabricating he particularly enjoys CNC machining and cutting of parts, combining his hobby and his profession.
