About

Michael Brown is an experienced maker of writing pens or “pen-turner,” as we call it. This specific presentation has a wide range of interests for those in the Drawing & Painting, Fiber, Print & Book Arts, Tech Lab, Woodworking, and Writer’s studios.

His pen-turning journey began in 2007, after inheriting his father’s woodworking tools, and a few pen kits. What started as a tribute to his father became a passion and grew well beyond your typical pen turning. His presentation will include a live demonstration with camera projection on a large screen for easier viewing of his technique and process for making a pen.

Mike has turned everything from wood and acrylic to bronze and ebonite. He has designed and 3D-printed his own custom jigs in the Tech Lab for more accurate cuts and for building segmented pens. He is now exploring the world of dip pens and handmade inks. Mike has created his own inks from natural materials like walnuts, blueberries, and goldenrod in the Fabric Arts Studio dye lab. He also makes customized nib organizers in the Print & Book Arts Studio. He does it all!

Mike has lived and traveled all over the world, most recently Scotland and Sweden before moving to Poulsbo and discovering BARN.
