About

Learn how to coil pine needles into a basket. You'll learn coiling, stitching, joining and shaping techniques using prepared Georgia longleaf pine needles, drilled Washington wood slices, and waxed linen. Learn where and when to collect pine needles, and get suggestions about how to drill your own wood rounds, how to position a stitching needle to make different shapes, and how to care for and protect your basket.

Barbara Osborne

Barbara makes baskets and sculptural shapes with natural materials using traditional basketry techniques and contemporary designs. She collects and treats materials, imagines shapes and figures out ways to engineer them. She loves every part of the process of working with pine needles and rocks — finding them, shaping them, building armatures, painting or dyeing them and teaching these skills to others. She believes in community and making art, and one of her activities over the last eight years has been founding and running an event called The Coiling Convergence, which happens in April. Her work has been juried into over 100 exhibitions nationwide. Her website is www.pineneedlerock.com.
