Tech Lab

Robotics, Electronics

Combine art and technology to make critters (real or imagined) out of common materials like cardboard, paint, and paper. Then give them life through coding, motors, sensors, and a variety of electronic components.

You'll begin with an introduction to your robotics kits: micro:bit and the HummingbirdBit. You'll explore the different components, how to use them, and code them using a block-coding app called BirdBlox. Then learn different cardboard building techniques and mechanisms you can use for your creations.

  • Ages 10-14.
  • Skill level: Beginner. Coding or building experience is optional.
  • You can bring your own computer (a Bluetooth-enabled tablet is best), or you can borrow one from BARN. When you register, choose "Use BARN computer" or "Bring computer from home."
  • Wear clothes you don't mind getting paint on (even though you'll be wearing a lab coat).
  • Bring water and a snack.
  • Registration closes Monday, July 8, 2024.
