About

In this beginner workshop, you'll make wrapping paper with a repeating pattern of your own design while learning the art of relief printing. We will use Speedy Carve, a pink, eraser-like block used for carving and printing. This soft material is easy to carve and print by hand.

You'll learn:

  • How to design an image that works well in a repeating pattern.
  • How to transfer your design ideas to your block.
  • Safe carving techniques.
  • How to ink your block.
  • How to register/align your block to create a regular repeating pattern.
  • How to print/stamp Speedy Carve blocks by hand.
  • Studio clean up procedures.

You'll put your new skills to work, carving your block, and printing a one-color image repeatedly on paper to create one-of-a-kind holiday wrapping paper. We’ll provide several colors of paper to choose from.

You'll leave with the block you carved and the skills you gained to print more wrapping paper at home or at BARN. Note that this workshop does not use the studio’s etching press since a hand-printing technique works best for this project.

Detail

  • Skill level: Beginner.
  • You're encouraged to bring ideas, sketches, or images of what you’d like to carve onto your block. Simple designs work best.
  • The blocks will be four inches by six inches.
  • Bring a lunch. There is a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.
