About
In this introduction to the ancient art of weaving, you'll start by making simple woven potholders, while we discuss and design your main project — either a small bag or a scarf. You'll have access to a range of fibers and a rainbow of colors to design with. For the rest of the week, you'll focus on creating this personal project on BARN’s rigid heddle looms.
This class is suitable for students with no weaving experience. Students with some weaving experience who wish to develop their skills by using new fibers and experimenting with more advanced techniques would also enjoy this class.
By the end of the week, you can expect to have completed at least one woven potholder and your unique main project. More importantly, you'll leave with the knowledge of how to warp and use these two hand looms to design and make many future projects!

Instructors or Guides
Alison Waller
She has taken classes with many local and nationally recognized weavers at BARN, developing her skills as a weaver and a teacher. She’s now delighted to serve as the weaving coordinator in the Fiber Arts Studio, where she also teaches rigid heddle and floor loom classes.
As an archaeology major specializing in the European Mesolithic, she spent a lot of time learning about past people through the rocks they left behind. Her recent fascination with weaving has helped to fill in the picture of the “missing majority” of humanity’s material culture, made up of perishable material that is under-represented in the archaeological record. Practicing crafts with such a deep-rooted importance to humanity across the world, using just natural materials and ancient technology, gives Alison what she describes as an enormous sense of well-being and connection.
