About
Complete all requirements for working independently during the studio's Open Studio hours, and get follow-up experience with the tools as you make a beautiful and practical pizza peel.
This class is specifically designed to welcome teen woodworkers at least 14 years old to become full participants in the shop. The class includes three classes that usually need to be taken separately before you can qualify for working on personal projects during the 30 hours a week of Open Studio, when a safety monitor is on duty. Those classes are Orientation to the Woodshop, Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1 (covers jointers, planers, table saws, the miter saw and drill presses) and Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2 (routers and the router table, bandsaws, a variety of stationary sanding tools, and scroll saws).
For the pizza peel, you will:
- Choose the types of wood you want to use from a selection BARN will provide.
- Cut and shape the wood into strips using a jointer, planer, and table saw.
- Learn to properly apply glue and clamps to hold the strips together.
- Use a bandsaw, sanders and a rasp to shape your glued-up piece into a custom pizza peel.
- Finish with a food-safe butcher block oil that will bring out the beauty of the wood and protect it.
