About

Whether you're a woodworker who wants to team up with a designer, a designer who wants to team up with a woodworker, or a person who wants to build/design on your own, here's your chance to build a birdhouse that might just be in a in a show to benefit Bainbridge Arts and Crafts (BAC).

In August, BAC, a 76-year-old nonprofit gallery in downtown Winslow, will feature drawings of birds by renowned Bainbridge Island architect Johnpaul Jones (BARN's architect). At the same time, the gallery wants to display birdhouses built by BARN's community. The birdhouses will all be for sale, with half the proceeds going to the artist and half to the gallery, which is struggling to rebound from a financial crisis.

This event will give you an opportunity to build a birdhouse for BAC to consider for its show. The birdhouse-building event is free and open to creative folks, including those without woodworking experience.

Details

  • Beginners and artisans from other studios at BARN are especially welcome.
  • You can sign up as a designer interested in partnering with a woodworker, or a woodworker who wants to team up with a designer, or someone who wants to build on your own.
  • While the birdhouses don't need to be built of wood and other materials are fine, this event focuses on ones with wood as a main feature. Email wood.programming@bainbridgebarn.org if you want to build a birdhouse out of a different material and have it considered for the show.
  • This event ends at noon but if your birdhouse isn't complete, you can stay afterward during Open Studio time to complete it. Open Studio the day of the class runs from noon to 6 PM.
  • This  has no prerequisites but you'll be limited mostly to hand tools if you haven't taken the safety-training classes required for most of the major power tools in the studio. A qualified woodworker will make cuts for you on tools you aren't qualified to use.

Materials

  • BARN will supply wood and other basic materials, plus paint pens and wood-burning tools to decorate your birdhouse.
  • Bring additional items to embellish your birdhouse if you have them. These might include beads, fabric, decorative found objects, etc.

Class Policies

  • Open to ages 14 and up as the main builder or designer.
  • Adults are welcome to bring a youth 10 years old and older to help. Register for a single spot.
  • You must wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair and avoid dangling clothing and jewelry. Bringing your own safety glasses is recommended.
