About

Part of our work will include examining the works of famous artists and exploring their approach to color. Here are the focuses of each day:

  • Introduction to the color wheel: Learn about primary, secondary, tertiary colors, and tints, shades, and tones. You'll look at how various artists use different color schemes and painting techniques and create your own color wheel by mixing watercolors.
  • Still-life in color with watercolors: You'll put our color wheel theory into action by drawing from still-life and using watercolors, pencils, and pens.
  • Self-portrait in oil pastels: Explore different types of portraits, discuss some famous works, and experiment with creating your own self-portrait in the spirit of an artist of your choice.
  • Exploring the abstract by experimenting with pens, watercolors, and oil pastels: You'll be abstracting an image of your choice into a composition of colors and shapes, while developing your own color scheme. You'll have a choice to work with watercolors or oil pastels.

Maya Leites

Maya is a Bainbridge Island-based artist with a background in architecture. She’s also a classical musician, educator, and parent. She has founded several community-based art initiatives, including ArTchitecture - kids studio, a creative space designed to help children explore art and architecture, and Discover Arts in the Park, a non-profit organization based in Seattle. Maya’s artwork is focused on capturing the essence of form, space, time, and sound through her paintings. Her preferred mediums include acrylics, oil paints, charcoal, pastels, and ink.
Artist statement: As an artist, I believe that art is a powerful mode of communication that goes beyond words. My passion for architecture and music, coupled with my travels, has instilled in me a deep interest in understanding how human beings experience and interact with their environment. For me, every painting is a new adventure in discovering unique ideas, concepts, and techniques; each artwork tells a different story and presents both intellectual and practical challenges. Through my art, I strive to explore the depths of the human experience and bring new perspectives to light.
