About

Learn the Margarita Stitch in this workshop designed to provide the skills and materials to make coiled pine needle baskets/vessels that feature rock slices as bases. You'll start by learning the attachment technique of the Margarita Stitch harness on day one, then use this harness with half an irregularly shaped ammonite fossil on day two. You'll start two baskets and probably finish at least one in the course of the class.

Techniques you'll learn:

  • Margarita Stitch harness on prepared rock slices.
  • Harness variation that accommodates ammonite halves.
  • Use of a curved stitching needle and other tools.

Details

Skill level: You need to have some basic pine needle skills and coiling experience.

Materials

The materials fee, included in the cost of the class you select, covers all the supplies you'll need. You select the size of the ammonite fossil, which determines that materials fee, when you register:

  • Small ammonite (2.5 - 3 inches), 4 oz. of prepared pine needles, waxed linen cord, two stitching needles, and printed directions.
  • Larger ammonite (3.5 - 4.5 inches), 4 oz. of prepared pine needles, waxed linen cord, two stitching needles, and printed directions.

Barbara Osborne

Barbara makes baskets and sculptural shapes with natural materials using traditional basketry techniques and contemporary designs. She collects and treats materials, imagines shapes and figures out ways to engineer them. She loves every part of the process of working with pine needles and rocks — finding them, shaping them, building armatures, painting or dyeing them and teaching these skills to others. She believes in community and making art, and one of her activities over the last eight years has been founding and running an event called The Coiling Convergence, which happens in April. Her work has been juried into over 100 exhibitions nationwide. Her website is www.pineneedlerock.com.
