About

Make your own sketchbook and learn how to bind like "real" bookbinders. You'll learn about the case binding technique, which involves sewing multiple signatures (groups of pages) together to create a traditional book.

You'll have two choices for the sketchbook's cover. You can either create your own hard cover by hand gluing paper to board, or you can repurpose the cover of an old book. This is a versatile technique that is the foundation for traditional book binding and can be used for large or small books.

Throughout the day, we'll discuss the history of book binding, watch demonstrations of techniques, create our covers, and sew the book pages together. At the end, everyone will have their own, one-of-a-kind sketchbook.

Details

  • You're welcome to bring in an old, hardcover book (6 inches by 9 inches, or smaller) if you'd like to repurpose its cover for your sketchbook. Otherwise, you'll make a new cover using studio supplies.
  • Bring a lunch. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.

Project

You'll create a unique, blank sketchbook with a hard cover and at least five signatures (groups of pages).

Materials

A $35 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you'll need.
