About

In this two-day, hands-on workshop, you will discover how to create durable mosaics on fiberglass mesh—a versatile method that lets you design on a flat surface and later transfer your work to a permanent location. You will make two 8” x 8” mosaics: one installed on a tile board and one pre-grouted and ready to install onto a wall, backsplash, or other surface.

Along the way, you will explore the advantages and limitations of working on mesh, learn when and how to use pre-grouting, and gain confidence with thinset and grout—including how to mix, apply, and store them. You will also see an innovative, eco-friendly installation method that avoids plastics, plus a bonus technique using waterproofing membrane.

Through slideshow examples, demonstrations, and plenty of hands-on practice, you will leave with practical skills, insider tips, and adaptable strategies for both personal and community mosaic projects—even with groups of beginners.

All materials are provided, including stained glass, mesh, thinset, grout, tools, and support boards. No prior mosaic experience is required.

This workshop runs each day 10am - 5pm with a mid-day break. Please bring a snack or lunch.

Materials

A $50 materials fee, included in the class price, covers all stained glass, fiberglass mesh, thinset, grout, tools, mixing containers, support boards, substrates, and supplies needed to complete two 8” x 8” mosaics.

Student needs to bring:

  • A sketchbook or notebook and pen/pencil for notes and design ideas
  • Safety glasses (recommended for glass nipping)
  • A dust mask (optional, for mixing grout/thinset if sensitive)
  • Clothes you don’t mind getting messy or an apron
  • A snack or lunch for the mid-day break

Optional (if you have them and prefer your own):

  • Personal mosaic tools (glass cutter, nippers, tweezers)
  • Favorite stained glass or tile pieces to incorporate
  • Simple design patterns or inspiration images

Prerequisites

While no prior mosaic experience is required, this class does not teach glass cutting. Students should either be comfortable with glass cutting, bring precut pieces, or use nippers to trim the supplied glass, as the focus is on mesh fabrication and installation techniques.

Class Policies

Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. No food is allowed in the studio. Beverages must have a lid.

Jennifer Kuhns

Jennifer Kuhns has been displaying and selling artwork for more than three decades and has been working in mosaic since 2001. Her work ranges from strikingly dimensional figurative and landscape imagery to decorative, stylized mosaic installations. She has been featured in many exhibitions and galleries throughout the country, and works primarily with stained glass, carefully shaping each piece for assemblage into exquisite mosaic art. Her public art and community projects demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and social justice, as well as a rare ability to engage, empower, and create community with all ages and socio-economic groups. She also creates custom mosaics for corporate and private clients, with mosaic floors and murals installed throughout the U.S. (and one in Canada.)

Jennifer lives and works on a small farm in rural Western WA with a menagerie of animals, a very supportive spouse and a young adult daughter. Jennifer and her husband both studied cultural anthropology and still have a passionate interest in culture (ancient and modern) and folk art and travel to other countries as often as possible.
