About

High schoolers can bake holiday shortbread squares and pack them into decorative boxes to go to the Helpline House food bank.

Students can choose to use a food processor or learn how to do this by hand. After the cookies come out of the oven, they’re covered with chocolate and crushed peppermint candy.  During cooling time, you’ll take a hot cocoa break with a snack. Then you’ll practice precision cutting skills to pack the cookies into boxes per Community Loaves standards. Community Loaves is a non-profit organization that connects volunteer home bakers with food banks to provide fresh, nutritious baked goods throughout Washington, Oregon, California, and Idaho.
This BARN-led Community Loaves project. Community Loaves recruits home-based volunteers who bake nutritious bread and energy cookies using approved recipes. The organization manages the process through volunteer hubs, provides training, and ensures the baked goods meet health guidelines for safe donation from home kitchens. This system provides food banks with a source of high-quality, baked goods that are often unavailable through other means.
