About

About

Kiln carving — for achieving bas relief, or carved effects, in your glass work by combining fusing and slumping — is a technique glass artists want in their repertoire. This class also is a great introduction to fused glass. Kiln carving can move your glass past a flat surface as you learn to create texture and a sculptured appearance in your piece. Learn how to take your kiln-carved piece in new directions by adding embellishment, additional texture, and colors.

First we’ll discuss design fundamentals and plan your project. A number of designs will be provided for students to use but you are encouraged to bring your own design sketch or photo inspiration to class. Use your creativity in transforming a flat piece of glass into 3-D form using the kiln-carving technique.

Next, you’ll create your own kiln-formed bas relief using an X-ACTO knife and fiber paper and learn how to correctly place your glass into the kiln for firing.
